Hiking:

There are wonderful opportunities for hiking in the general area of Kranjska Gora, many suitable for day trips that finish in time for a return to the conference by 16:00. The websites given below list a number of excellent possibilities.

Mountaineering:

Triglav is the largest mountain in Slovenia; it is the center of the Triglav National Park (Kranjska Gora is sited adjacent to the north boundary of the park). Ascending Triglavis a target for many Slovenians and visitors. It is accessible by a combination of hiking and via ferrata, or by several different climbing routes.

Kranjska Gora lies at an altitude of 2645 ft.; Triglav lies at 9396 ft. The difference of 6751 ft and the logistics of getting to the start of the ascend and the return means that attendees would not be able to ascend and return in time for the conference. Normally ascending Triglav by any of the several routes takes two full days. Thus this peak should be scheduled for days prior to or after ASIC.

Rock Climbing:

The area around Kranjska Gora has a nice collection of rock climbing sites. The better climbers might be enticed by climbing in the Vršič Pass [https://kranjska-gora.si/en/attractions/vrsic-pass-and-the-russian-road]. The high mountain climbing area on Vršič is clearly visible from the pass, and can be reached by following the path that leads to the shelter under Špička. The smooth slabs with good rock offer 35 routes ranging from 18 to 100 metres in length.

As usual we will offer a group climbing day to which everyone is invited, from children to adults, from those wishing to try climbing for the first time to experts. We plan to have this popular outing on July 5, Wednesday. The likely site will be near Golica, near the border with Austria, about 45 minutes drive from Kranjska Gora. We will arrange a car caravan to transport everyone.

Via Ferrata

Another favorite activity in which high mountain exposure and scenic views are available without technical climbing skills and with considerable safety: Each participant walks along, up, and down cliffs and canyons attached to and holding on to iron cables affixed to the rock faces. This is often done by families and children, though the more difficult ones might be facilitated by a guide.

There are quite a few via ferrata in the area of Kranjska Gora, varying in length, difficulty, and scenic beauty. Sone examples are found at:

Canyoning

The participants don wetsuits and with the help of guides enter and descend a mountain stream in a narrow canyon. This exciting activity requires no experience and is suitable for families and children. Hardy participants may choose to jump into pools enroute:

Jumping is allowed but not required

Sliding into pools is encouraged

Parasailing

This is another exciting activity that can be enjoyed by novices, when done in tandem with an expert guide. One lifts off typically from a hillside or cliff (usually after a cable ride to reach the start), using a parasail large enough to lift and sail both the guide and the client. The two ascend thermals (often following birds) and eventually descend and land in a field.
